5 ways technology has changed the world of recruitment for the better

It is no secret that the world of technology has completely transformed the recruitment space. From allowing room for new businesses to enter the market to the creation of digitally-focused jobs, the recruitment industry is unrecognisable from where it was 20 years ago.

Global reach

With the open nature of the internet, information of any kind can be obtained instantly. As a place where we can research, connect and learn, the internet has proved to be the perfect tool for businesses wanting to expand their candidate pool. With 4.1bn people worldwide expected to use the internet in 2018, when it comes to online target audiences, recruiters are spoilt for choice. Able to promote to people across the globe, we have come a long way from reading job adverts in the local newspaper.

Improved candidate experience

Whilst hiring individuals is the ultimate aim for a recruitment drive, a great deal of emphasis needs to be placed on retaining employees, with poor retention rates proving very costly. Recent research has shown just how important the onboarding process is and how much of an impact it can have on how long employees stay within the business. One way to ensure higher retention rates is through an effective onboarding process, which can be enhanced with technology.

From seamless online application processes and video interviews to digital training, onboarding is now easier and more attentive to candidate needs.

Gig economy

The UK's gig economy is continuing to flourish and develop in different ways, with professionals collaborating on projects online from the comfort of their own home. This new wave in employment has only been made possible by technology. Whilst there are many benefits for workers (flexibility and autonomous working), there are various advantages for recruiters. Having an international pool of workers to choose from, recruiters can outsource specific tasks for specific lengths of time, all managed online. In addition, recruiting for gig workers allows for cost-savings on office rent and a reduced environmental footprint.

Mobile recruiting

Almost every recruiter website or portal is now responsive, meaning candidates and recruiters can connect through mobile devices such as smartphones, laptops and tablets. When we carried out our own research into mobile recruiting, Peoplebank found that 72% of candidates view careers sites on their mobile. We have seen an increase in popularity for our careers sites, with our fully mobile website helping recruiters to market their jobs the modern way.

Social CVs

Candidate-related data can be obtained from all over the internet, with various businesses monitoring candidates' social media accounts and online presence in order to build a digital picture of their employment suitability. This is why in recent years we have seen the decline of the traditional CV, with recruitment companies using tools to see how potential candidates converse online, their online social standing, the size of their professional network and the influence they have on their chosen market.
